How is it going for you ladies trying your hand at this?? My really really local paper always has a small blurb about accepting freelance articles, ect. I was thinking about giving it a try, maybe writing about cost cutting ideas, or doing a series of articles about cost cutting since SO many people seem to be looking for ideas on this.

I'm not a very good writer, never have been. LOL

Ah, I asked this same question on here once, in so many words. I was thinking of doing the same thing for our local paper, but was wondering if anyone would read it. (My thread got no replies, so at least yours will!!)

I did a little freelance writing for my neighbor--did a business plan. It went okay, but wasn't continued work by any means.

I think people would read it--those who still read the paper. I guess rural people still do usually real their local paper. In a town like mine, where everyone knows everyone, you're always reading about ppl you know. Even if you're not a good writer, just edit and proofread A LOT, and have other ppl do it, too, before it goes in. As long as your content is interesting, the quality doesn't tend to matter in local papers. The average reading level for newspapers is 3rd grade! I think you'll do fine.

I have had a short story published and have submitted a couple of articles to small magazines. It can become a nice career but it does take work and lots of time. Getting your writing seen by the right people is the most difficult part in my opinion. If I had the time to devote to it, I would love freelancing on a regular basis. Maybe after the kids are older.

Call it a labor of love! It is hard work and I have two stories wanting for me a chance to write -- I need the kids to nap at the same time! Or at least the baby. But it what I've always wanted to do and it is pretty exciting to see your name in print.

If you're really interested in freelancing then there are some websites that have jobs listed, I know elance.com is one of them. I'm not sure how easy it is to get jobs on there. I have published my own book and am currently writing an ebook about becoming a writer. Writing has a lot to do with persistence and passion.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Congratulations! Freelance writing sounds REALLY fun to me. Does one need a certain degree to be accepted locally or otherwise? TIA

Sometimes a newspaper or such will want you to have a journalism degree. But you can do plenty of articles for magazines, websites, newsletters and other stuff that don't require any degree at all. Local papers may just ask for a sample of your work. I am trying to submit some articles to my local paper about saving money from a homemaker's point of view. I would love to get a column, but right now I just want the exposure.

Oh, I never submitted anything. I moved, got pregnant, the baby started walking, and disagreeing... in no particular order. You know, life got in the way! You've rekindled my interest in it, tho, and got me thinking about it again.

Have you tried submitting anything yet? I'd really like to know if anybody's doing this, and getting anywhere with it. That is, getting articles printed and read. I'm still wondering about the reader base for the topic of frugality. I do think it should be broader now, tho, since the economy's what it is.
