Do any of you ladies have to clean up more after you have company? My parents just left here this afternoon after spending the weekend with us. After what I say please do not think that I do not enjoy spending time with my parents because I do. It just seems like after they spend the weekend with us I have to clean up more when they are gone or even while they are here. I know a lot of it is because I get kind of uptight about messes in my house. I know that it's probably because we have a small house w/only 3 bedrooms so when they stay they have to sleep in the living room. It just seems like their stuff is all over the place when they are here & that I constantly have dirty dishes to clean up. My parents do a good job of helping-my dh thinks I just get too uptight about this.
When I was growing up my parents house was always cluttered & it still is. When I started college I realized how important it is to have a clean house. Now mind you my house is far from spotless. Right now there are some dirty dishes in the sink & some toys that are in the living room floor that need to be picked up, but I just can't stand for things to be cluttered. Does anybody else experience this? DH doesn't understand because his mom always keeps their house clean.

I totally understand.

I don't want to go on vacation or even over night. We have a dog that needs to be taken care of. My FIL is more than willing to stay with her but that means he has to stay here. If I go away I want my house the way I left it. I usually clean before leaving and don't want to have to clean when I come back.

I understand how you feel...we LOVE having company and we love my family, but yes, every time the come I think I have to clean more after they leave than I do before they get here. for us it's now kind of a routine that we've gotten down pat. It is a lot of work! We love to have company though, so it's kind of worth it in the long run.

Nope...and especially not after my parents leave, my mom bless her heart, cleans when she gets bored, she hates to sit and do nothing, so she will start cleaning up, there is virtually nothing to clean up after they leave...now parties and such, yes there is cleaning to do, but that's to be expected!
I think I clean more for when we're expecting company!

That's great. I never have to do this when my in-laws are here. My mil is like your mom, she will ask if she clean or do laundry for me. It was great when she stayed with us after my kids were born. They are just neater when they stay over.

I clean while they are lol
I can't sit still and watch a mess accumulate especially in the kitchen. My friends laugh about it - last year at my birthday party they tied me to my chair for an hour so that I would sit down and relax.

Oh my gosh! I don't know why I do it but a few days before my in-laws come to visit (they live states away, so it's usually once or twice a year) my hubby and I clean the house like crazy. Spottless clean and all, including the yard. What's interesting about it is within 10 minutes after they step foot in the house, it is a cluttered mess. Jackets, shoes everywhere, plates, glasses, trash. I'm constantly picking up after them! Sometimes it gets to the point where I won't even care till after they leave. I don't know why, but there house is clean. But when they come over it's like total slobdom. I also cannot stand it when they walk all over my WHITE carpet with dirty shoes! I spend hours after they leave scrubbing the dirt/mud stains off of it. I can't stand clutter and they know that. My mother-in-law once caught me on my hands and knees in the kitchen scrubbing the floors. She told me a house with kids should not be so clean. Uh no! My kids watch me clean the house and they've picked up on the habit. They actually clean up after themselves AND help me with house chores after they are done with theres. So there! Ok it's time for me to calm down now...considering I have to start my housecleaning tomorrow morning. They're coming to visit in a couple days!

I have very little to do before company/guests arrive since I tend to keep the house pretty clean anyway, but I spend so much time cleaning if they stay for an extended time and then after they leave. I, too, like things to be clutter-free and where they should be. I love having people here, but I can't stand the mess that usually comes with them. My brother, his pregnant wife, and their toddler are coming to visit in a week or so. She never helps with anything when they are here....pregnant or not...and she does nothing when we visit them. Matt and I do all the cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, etc whether we are at our house with them or at theirs. Anyway, you are not alone.
