Has anyone ever had or gone to a blessingway?

We are going to do one for my SIL. One of the things we are going to do is give everyone a candle to take home and they light them when she is labor. This is MY to-do. Does anyone have any ideas other than just giving them a plain candle and a glass holder?

I was trying to think of something special, but can't figure anything out. The mom-to-be is very earthy, organic kind of girl and supports other women in labor all the time as a doula. I was thinking I could leave some candles for her at the house that her DH can light for her to watch when she is in labor.

Have everyone write out a special wish/thought/blessing for mom-to-be and/or baby. You could take a picture of mom with each guest and put it together with the comments into a small scrapbook.

Do a "sharing circle" where everyone has a chance to say something positive they learned or experienced in giving birth, or in being a parent.

Have mom/sister/close friend of mom-to-be braid her hair and put flowers in it.

Give mom-to-be a foot bath and massage.

A wonderful quote for just such an occasion is:
"When you have come to the edge of all the light you know and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, Faith is knowing that one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught how to fly."

Basically you want to create a very intimate and sacred setting to focus in on mom-to-be and her innate "power" to give birth beautifully

Hope some of those ideas help!

For the candles, you could paint the votives with a nature them and fill them the space around the candle with sand or pebbles.

I like the sand idea - I don't think I am artistic enough to paint on it - THANKS!

May I ask what this religion is?
It sounds almost like a Wiccanning. (Witch's birth ceremony)

Just FYI: I don't know if her DH is going to be at the hospital with her, but if he is, they don't allow candles

Good luck though. I've never heard of any of this. It sounds wonderful.
