I have wondered the same thing, and just discovered something not so new. I bought a small container of essential oil at Bath n Body Works along with this ceramic dish that you burn it in. They have been clearancing these dishes for $3. I'm sure you can find one somewhere else too. Anyway, just take whatever essential oil you choose and put a few drops in it to burn. Mine smell so fragrant, that I dont' even need to burn them. It permeates a couple of rooms. I have also seen to put a few drops of essential oil on cotton balls and place them around the house (hidden of course) and that will give your room a nice smell. I have also heard to take that cotton ball and rub the essential oil on a light bulb, and when you turn the bulb on, it will smell good. I like to mix up the smells. My personal favorite way to use them is in the little dish that I can lite if I want to. Oh, we even put drops in our non-scented tea lights for a new smell...maybe to even make a romantic evening.. The essential oils are around $7-11, but last a very long time and have many uses. I have just been slowly collecting different fragrances. I think it is much less expensive than candles or these air fresheners that seem to run out monthly. More questions? just ask...I've been on an essential oil kick lately.

I buy those big honkin' things of vinegar at BJ's as I use it for everything. It cleans almost anything. It is great for wood and linoleum floors and is a great disinfectant. I used it to clean all ds's toys and his highchair etc when he was a baby because it is 100% safe for them.

I also use vinegar to deodorize the house. Just take a spray bottle of it (I use a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water) and go around the house misting the air. Yes, at first it smells like vinegar but it dissipates and the air is freshened.

In the bathroom and for our mirrors, door knobs, and light switches I use rubbing alcohol - it shines chrome nicely and is also an excellent disinfectant. I put it in one of those travel size sprayers so it fits right in the bathroom cabinet and is easy to grab when I need it.

I am going to start using vinegar in the dishwasher when our jet dry runs out- Thanks for that tip and all these great tips!

I use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water for all cleaning. I'll use newspaper or coffee filters with it for chrome fixtures and windows. It works GREAT with hardwater stains!! I have tried almost all cleaning products and the vinegar water worked the absolute best when it came to the bathroom sinks and hardwater buildup. And it's so cheap..yah!

Was going to post a recipe for home made baby wipes here, but I see someone has already done this. Following that recipe, you can also cut the roll in HALF (I use Viva also)and use half the ingrediants mentioned to make smaller batches. Once placed in warm water, the inside cardboard will come out easily, and you can just grab each wipe from the middle of the roll. Around here, baby wipes clean alot of things, not just baby bottoms. This recipe is SO much cheaper than store bought wipes!

I just wanted to comment that I've been using the following to clean my house (and for beauty needs) for YEARS!! My list includes: vinegar (both white, and apple cider), salt, sugar, dish soap, bleach, baking soda, lemon juice, corn meal, and olive oil. Things most people already have in their homes. Does just as good, if not a BETTER job, than anything I've ever bought! I have spray bottles of pure vinegar on my kitchen counter (use this to wipe up after cutting meats!) and in my bathroom. Cleans glass/mirrors really well, kills odors, and disinfects everything! Vinegar also cuts grease really well and can be used as a super fabric softner!

For a home made "Soft Scrub": Baking Soda, tiny bit of water, dish soap, dash of vinegar (add slowly, so it doesn't fizz up alot), dash of salt, and lemon juice. (You can omit lemon, salt, and vinegar, however.) Mix into paste to clean stove top, counters, sinks, greasy residue on pots and pans. Also, your hands are very soft when you're done cleaning!! I have a yogart cup (with LID) mixed up of this at all times on my kitchen counter. I just add a bit of each ingrediant to it every once in a while and stir!

For a home made carpet freshner: Just mix baking soda, and your choice of spice!!
I like cinnamon, nutmeg and/or pumpkin spice around the holidays, especially!! You can use anything really...all-spice, crushed clove...etc.

To clean toilets: I usually just dump some vinegar in there to clean, but you can also use bleach or...FLAT COKE! Pour in what's left from a flat 2-liter, leave for an hour, scour and flush. The acids and carbonation left in the Coke do the work for you! I always follow this with a rinse of either vinegar or bleach, however, as Coke doesn't kill germs...

Also, someone asked for a cheaper way to freshen the air in your home...Besides making my own Fabreeze with fab. softner and water, I buy cheap fabric softner sheets and then hide them everywhere...in my car, my drawers, inside pillow cases, and sometimes I just hang them up in a room with a clothes pin and let the smell dissapate, or tape them to the front of a fan!! (ha) I will also leave the above mentioned mix of carpet freshner on the carpet. Can't hurt anything...it's all edible..unless you've got a baby crawling around, I guess...

For cleaning drains, I was told that boiling hot water is the best. But this is what I do every so often to deter back ups: Pour baking soda down the drain then follow with vinegar. (A little at a time, though, as it will foam up!) It dissolves grease way down in the drain, and freshens the drain all at the same time!! Follow with plenty of hot water!

Also, someone mentioned WANTING to clean with bleach, but that it was too expensive. Well, I buy most of (if not ALL) my cleaning supplies from the dollar store. Just bought some bleach there for $1.23, I think it was. And it's "lemon scented". Not bad for as long as it lasts.

Oh, and for beauty needs...I mix either corn meal or sugar and olive oil, and use for a face and body scrub about 1X/wk. I have a travel container (with screw off lid) in my shower at all times. I also have a squeeze bottle of OO in there and use as an "after shower" oil. Does WONDERS!! As long as you don't mind smelling like an "Old Italian Woman" for a while (ha), olive oil is SO good for your skin. I also slather my feet and hands with OO about once a week and go to bed with socks on both.

I also make my own "milk bath": Mix powdered milk with a touch of store bought bath powders (I like Calgon English Garden powdered bubble bath, or Healing Garden's Green Tea!!) and a touch of epsom salt. You could even make a more "liquid-y" mixture to include a bit of olive oil, water, and liquid bubble bath! I've even packaged this recipe up (in both bottles, and as a dry mixture) and given them away as Xmas presents before!!

And...I just tried something new a few days ago...rinsed my hair with a mixture of 1 part vinegar, 3 parts COLD water after rinsing out hair color. (And before applying conditioner.) Supposed to hold color longer. We'll see.

Thanks for all your ideas, ladies! I'll have to try the lemon juice and water to clean my micro! Never heard of that one!!

Sorry this is so long, but I get excited talking about my "home made recipes!" I'm sure there are more that I'm just not able to think of right now. I'll add them later as I think of them, though!!

I just found this wonderful homemade laundry detergent
Here It cost me .60 cents to make 64 loads worth. I tried it out and it gets our clothes clean too. I used a vanilla essential oil to make it smell good. I also used a 1/2 cup of vinegar with a few drops of the vanilla in it in the rinse cycle in place of softener. It worked great!!!! I was a little concerned that my laundry might smell like vinegar but once the laundry dries the only smell that remains is a soft vanillar smell. vinegar not only softens your clothes naturally but it takes detergent out of clothes too. I have been getting the All free and clear because my kids have sensitive skin. It cost between .9 to .10 cents a load to use. I figure if I use this for a year around 480 loads. I will spend around 4.80 on detergent. Hmmm... am I cheap or what
I used my food processor to grate my bar of soap. It took about 10 seconds. The whole thing took me about 20 min. I think that I could do it a lot faster now because I was reading directions as I went the first time. this recipe is a little more concentrated then the one I was using. i like it
Dish washing detergent:
mix equal part of washing soda and borax(can find them in the laundry Ilse at walmart)
I wasn't totally sold on this so I mix then equally with my regular detergent. It works pretty well. The vinegar in the rinse cycle helps lot.
I like to scent my homemade cleaners with a few drops of essential oils or scents like citrus.

I have a laundry detergent recipe that, I admit, I haven't tried yet. But this one also called for washing soda, which I was UNABLE TO FIND at ANY Walmart, or grocery store I went to, within an hours' radius of where I live. It wasn't until I visited IL. last summer that I finally found some at Jewel/Osco. I bought 3 boxes!!

I like the idea of adding essential oils to it, but isn't that kind of expensive?
Where do you buy your essential oils? At a store like Michaels' Crafts, or somewhere? I do have one near where I live. (Hour away).
