Lose that loud, clunky air purifier ~ not only can houseplants rid the air of the organic chemicals and toxins that cause asthma and other ailments, they're also proven to reduce stress and improve your mental well-being. Here are some of the best greens to keep nearby according to B.C. Wolverton, author of How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 Houseplants That Purify Your Home of Office.

Snake Plant:
Since it's practically indestructible, the snake plant will remove toxins in rooms where no other plants will grow (like areas with no windows). Keep one in your bathroom, work cubicle or any other room that has limited sunlight.

Christmas Cactus:
Because this plant gives off oxygen at night (most plants produce oxygen during the day), it's perfect for your bedroom, family room, or other spots that get a lot of evening attention.

Rubber Plant:
It's the best at removing indoor chemicals, such as formaldehyde (found in particleboard furniture and upholstery), benzene and ammonia. The rubber plant is also a great humidifier. Keep one anywhere you need a pretty plant that pumps moisture into the air.

Some great tips! Thanks! I know of a woman that has breathing problems (every year when they burn the fields in this area it about kills her) and she has her house stuffed full of plants for this very reason ... that and she likes them!

OOO, thanks. I have house plants, and I love them, and I love that they are good for the indoor air quality. Now I just gotta see if I can get some more that are "indestructible."

Thanks!

Thanks! I've been wanting to get some plants but didn't know what would be the best. I don't have an ideal sunny spot for them inside.
