First off, stop the water leak. Either the landlord should do it or they should. At this point it really doesn't matter but the mold problem won't go away until the water leak is stopped. The landlord's homeowner's insurance MIGHT cover the damage to the walls and floors. If not, hopefully they have renter's insurance and that might help them with their belongings.
Next they have to wipe down everything that will stand it with bleach - the walls, the floors, etc. The drywall, if there is drywall, will need to be removed and replaced. If they have plaster walls, usually the surface can be treated with bleach and repainted. A fumigator can come in and put a mold killing gas behind the plaster walls to treat the wood lathe.
Yes sunlight and getting the humidity out of the house will help - but not until the water leak is fixed.
With water leaks come bugs, not just water damage and mold. The landlord really needs to fix the problem or he isn't going to have a house to rent! If he won't do anything, they need to check with the local housing authority which might have some jurisdiction to get the landlord to do something.
