I find it easy to clean the toothbrush holder by pouring some bleech in it and swirling it around they letting it sit for awhile. That will clean all of that "gunk" out, then I put it in the dishwasher to clean off the bleech.
Just an FYI

mine just go directly in the dishwasher, so does my kitchen sink drain/stopper

Mine used too as well- though it never really got out the "gunk" cleaned out. This way I know for sure that nasty stuff is gone - the bleech just takes it right away

Mine goes directly into the trash right after I bring a new one home from the dollar store

So how many of those are on the landfill?

I use peroxide.
