At our old house we had a great mud room with nice big built in cabinet full of shelves to keep everything stored away and organized, all year round. At our new house, I have a closet by the back door, and I have two baskets up on a shelf for the kids gloves/hats etc but they can't reach it. Argh. I need a new system I think. I want to keep everything by the back door though! Where do you store your stuff?

I have two plastic stacking bins on the floor of my entry closet that have slide out drawers. Coats hang above and the drawers contain all the gloves, hats and scarves. If the drawers are full, I have too many items and get rid of some.

I have three stacking recycling bins stacked up in the back room. We each have a bin. They're nice, because you can reach in to put stuff in or take out without having to lift the other bins off! I screwed plastic clothes pins to the side of our closet to hold wet hats and mittens, but anything dry goes in the bins.

We also have short shelves at the end of our closet to hold all of our shoes and boots.

We don't have a mud room (or even a convenient back door) in our home, so I hung a shoe bag on the inside of the front closet door. The pockets are great for gloves and hats, and my boys do put shoes in the lower pockets as well.

We have an over-the-door hanger with hooks on the inside of our entryway coat closet. I hang hats and scarves on that. We only have a few pairs of gloves, so I keep those in a small storage container on the shelf in the same closet.

I think what we have is meant for shoes, it goes over the closet rod and hangs it is narrow and has about 8 cubbies. We put baseball hats, gloves and the babies shoes in their. It doesn't take up much space and the kids can get it themselves.

Oh that's a great idea! I really don't want to put any type of bin or basket on the floor or in the area near the back door.

I have the over the door shoe holder too! We keep it on the door to the laundry room which leads to the garage. DH wears his shoes in the house, but I like mine only as I'm walking out the door so I keep my everyday shoes up high, and the last three rows are for the boys to put their hats, gloves, etc. (they have a shoe tub already)

In the past I've had them in a bin, but I had to get them down for them and I didn't like that. I've also had them in their dresser drawers, but then they just wear them around the house, which is fine, until we go to leave and can't find them. I've also kept them in a bag hanging from the shelf in the laundry room, but since they can't see in the bag they have to dig thru it, etc! I've also considered screwing a basket into the wall, but for now the shoe holder is working!

I'm in the same boat - I keep ours in a basket at the top of the closet but ds can't reach in there either. Depending on the size of your closet, would it be feasible to take one of those wicker crate like boxes (very sturdy - we got ours at Linen's and Things) and some how put a loop on the bottom of it and than hang that in the closet at their height? I'm not sure of the depth of the closet though so I'm not sure if that would work for you. I might try this myself. Or alternatively, I've seen these "day of the week" clothes cubbies in the children's Lillian Vernon catalogs - the are more for a stack of clothes each day but could easily be used as hanging storage from the top of your closet. I've also considered this myself. It would take up a lot of room, though, but for us it might work. Good luck.
