You could cut a cross in the one side.. cut in center from opening of mitt to end seam, then make cuts from the center of the mitt to the side seams. Get what I mean? when you look at the mitt, there should be a "+" cut into the one side. Then either round off each corner (at cut edges) to make it sort of round/scalloped or cut fringe into it (I don't know what the costume is) to make it more "shaggy". Sew or pin two pieces of string on the inside of the mitt so that you can tie it onto her head. Is that confusing? I can try to explain it better if you need me to.
