My clothes pole fell down - off the wall completely, leaving holes in the wall.

This is a reality check for me that I have WAY too many clothes. I don't even wear half of them. So, I wasn't ready to do the closet purge yet BUT someone is telling me that's where I should start.

Any tips for decluttering/purging a closet?

If you haven't worn it in a year get rid of it. Get rid of any duplicates. If you like to wear jeans, I would think no more than 6 pairs. But if you wear all sorts of pants, you probably don't need more than 3 or 4 pairs of jeans. I am not sure how far you want to pair down. Don't look back. Bag up what you decide to get rid of, and immediately drop it off somewhere. The best place in my area is the planet earth drop boxes. They are all over the place, and always open.

Yikes is right! I actually was noticing that my closet bar was sagging slightly the other day. I guess now that I am not working again I can store the work clothes. Just think in a few weeks you can get rid of a lot of clothes....the work ones! YAY!!!

Our fell down a few months ago. It took FOREVER to unload the closet and fix the bar and then hang things back up. Good luck with the purging.

I know!

The bad thing is that's what broke it - my wool suits, blazers, sweaters on top that I wear to work. Ugh, stuff I'm not going to have much use for - not all of those anyway. I know I can really weed them out now. It's just getting the gumption to do it - now I have to LOL!

Well, I guess mainly tops. I have ruined a few of my favorite shirts by not checking them carefully for stains. I don't even know if I did it myself, or if something got on them in the washer. I was really upset, because I was thinking about buying a couple of new shirts, and then I go and ruin the rest of the decent ones. It has been fun trying not to wear the same couple shirts every time I leave the house. I do not have a single pair of dress pants.
Anyway, if you and I are the same size. I would be willing to do some trading, I even have a little money in paypal. PM me.

Amy, I don't mean to laugh at you really I don't but when we met at IKEA I remember you saying "I need to clean out my cloest before it falls down"

Good luck, yes I have heard rule of thumb was if you have not worn in a year get rid of it.

I should have listened to myself!!!

I think if I take out all the stuff I haven't worn in a year it'll be pretty empty. Shoes too! Oh my, shoes are one of my weaknesses. I haven't bought a new pair in a while but before I started to WANT to save money I would buy shoes/boots/sandals like they were going out of style -- as a matter of fact I have some out of style ones now I need to pitch.
