Hello all~
First I would like to share with you all, that I have NEVER used a sewing machine, and well, I would love to give it a shot. I would be using the machine for attempting to sew pillows, curtains, the simpler things.. Do you have any suggestions on a good 1st time machine?? Thank you so much for any imput..

I ended up getting a standard Brother from Costco - I think we paid $200.00 at the time. I have seen that WalMart has them as well. I've been very happy with it - it sews a good straight stitch and a few fancy ones as well and it is very simple to use. Brother also has their manuals online! Which has helped me out more than once.

If you've never sewed before, you can sometimes find them 2nd hand and that way you would at least know if you enjoy it before spending a lot of money. My theory is, when this one wears out that I can probably step into a higher end model -- how high, I guess depends on our $$ at that time!

Mine's a Brother model also. I love it, and it's simple - which is what I need!! But I was just thinking the other day that I haven't used it enough to justify even owning it. I need to break it out again soon!!

Mine cost about $100 at Walmart (maybe a bit less...) and I agree that if you don't really have all that much money to put into one at first, try scouting out the local thrift store!! You might be suprised at what great deals you may find.

I have a Janome, that works great for me, but I don't know how much they cost as mine was inherited from my mother.

I do remember her Brother sewing machine and I really liked it.

I made the MISTAKE of buying a Singer right before Christmas. It didn't work at all, just made a grinding noise. I took it back and exchanged it for the Brother LS-2125i and I LOVE it! It was only $79, which was actually 10 less than the Singer. I got it at Walmart.

thank you for all the information.. Sounds like the Brother brand works good for you folks.. I did go to joann fabrics and they were showing me a Singer Inspiration 4205, It was 119.00, but if I can get the brother for less and seems like ppl are happy with them, than it sounds like a good 1st time machine for me.. thanks again.

I just bought a Singer for my 6-yr DD at Target for $69! It comes with a introductory book on how to sew which is pretty good and an instructional DVD. I have taken the sewing machine out of the box and I like it so far but I haven't run it yet or viewed the DVD.

If you're completely new to sewing with a machine, I recommend you purchase a machine at a fabric or sewing store that also provides lessons. You'll learn so much!

I don't sew that much but ended up with a Singer. I had a terrible time with it and trying to work the bobbin. I took it back and got a Brother at Walmart and I love it!!!
