I would love to learn to knit. Scarfs, blankets, simple items...does anyone have any teach yourself suggestions? What's the best way to go about learning? TIA

The Stitch and Bitch book has worked really well for me! I'm almost done with my 1st scarf! I'll post pictures of the thing when I'm done.

There is a show that comes on either DIY or TLC channel called Knitty Gritty...and every once in a while they show the basics of casting on and knit and purl. I watch it every once in a while and pick up some really good tips... I just picked up a pattern book from Hobby Lobby that had the basics in the front to learn how, and then watching them on tv helped me improve my knitting.

I first learn to knit through a local community ed class.
If looking online check out knittinghelp.com. It is a great site with video clips with different knitting techniques. It has been a great resources for learning new skills.

Thank you I bought a book and supplies. I've learned the "casting", I think thats what it's called. Now I'm stuck! The book isn't that helpful. I did learn the casting from an online website, yipee! Now what?? I guess having someone show me would be easier, I'll look into a class somewhere. Now's the time when I miss my mom the most, she would have been able to teach me these things!

Have you tried YouTube? I checked over there when I was learning to use circular needles for socks and being able to watch someone do it and explain was really helpful

Good luck!

I want to learn how to knit and bought a book and tried to teach myself. I failed. I need to find a class somewhere I guess.

I so failed at teaching myself from a book. However, I just took a great class and learned really quickly. I am not perfect but I am having a lot of fun!!!!! There are great books for "one skein" projects too!! I like small projects to help me feel more accomplished.

Check at your local colleges, community & university. I just got a flier booklet in the mail with some non-credit courses listed. This was one of the courses - it was one night, 3 hours, and I think the cost was under $20. I also agree with checking on YouTube - the things people put on there blow my mind but are totally helpful! You could also head to a local senior citizens home and chat it up with some of the old ladies. I'm sure they'd love to teach you how to knit - and share some good company in the process

A great resource for knitting videos:

KnittingHelp.com | Learn How to Knit

I've used this when I get stuck. It's easier to watch a video than to try to read a description (at least for me).

Good luck, I've been knitting about 2 years. I'm not great but I'm having fun!
