My washing machine blew it's motor last week, so we replaced my 10-year-old set. I had initially wanted the Whirlpool Duet, but front-loaders turned out to be way too big for our laundry room. We have the smallest laundry room known to man. I had 68 1/2" wide, by 54" tall (cabinets), and 29 1/2" deep to play with. When I was looking at machines I looked at the measurements for the washer, not thinking the measurements for the dryer would be different.
We ended up buying the Whirlpool Cabrio because it is high efficiency but is still a top-loader. So the guys delivered them today, and the washer JUST fit. I have about 1/4" of space between the washer and the door when it swings closed. At least it fit. The dryer is actually 29 1/4 inches deep, but my husband and his father have to cut the gas pipe that is currently sticking out of the wall so the dryer can fit flush against the wall. They also have to remove the trim from the bottom of the wall, as well as run an entirely new dryer vent hose. Instead of going from the back of the dryer and turning down and going through a hole in the floor and then outside, they are going to cut a hole in the wall and temporarily vent it into the garage (with something on the end to catch the lint). Then, in the spring, they will have to run it all the way to the outside of the house, like it's supposed to be.
The kids and I are going to be gone all day tomorrow, and I'm glad because I don't want to be around when they're working on the gas. Makes me nervous.
So, the question really is, have washers and dryers gotten way big over the past 10 years or what? I didn't really measure my last set, but when these new ones didn't fit I checked dimensions on the internet of just about every major brand and the smallest regular dryer I found was 29" deep. The Duets are like almost 32" deep.
Is everything getting bigger?
