I took up knitting this winter. I bought the Stitch and Bitch book which I liked for the most part. But for the first project they wanted you to learn to knit was a scarf. An ugly scarf that I hated by the time I was done, will never wear it, and barely was able to finish it. It was just too much.
But the scarf gave me some basic skills. And after that I went online and found patterns for dishclothes. They're amazing! They're useful! They're small projects that I finish in a couple nights time, and I've improved my knitting, and pattern reading a ton! I've finished four of them now and I love to open the drawers and see the happy little colors looking back at me! (When I worked with the group home I had solid white).
So for those looking to knit, take my advice, stay away from scraves and got for the little dish towel!
