I just got my first slr camera and so far I really like it, but wondering if anyone has any hints for a smooth transition....going from point and shoot to SLR? I know it will take some getting used to but I would love some feedback on the Olympus or SLR's in general. I took approx 900 photos on our Florida vacation. Some were good and some not so much. Any hints are welcome......thanks in advance!!!

I got a Canon Rebel XT in January and am still trying to navigate my way through it. Here's a couple things I can tell you:
  • Betterphoto.com is a great place for tips, articles, help with what your camera can do, ideas, inspiration, etc.
  • If you're planning on taking more than snapshops of your family, you need to take lots and lots of pictures. For every one hundred pictures you take, you might get one or two really fabulous ones. Even Ansel Adams said: " Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.”
  • Besides just candid shots of the kids and hubby in action, set pictures up like photographers do.
  • Take some closeups of the kids faces, they are wonderful!
  • Check out some books from the library on digital photography.
  • Consider taking a class. Our local Cord Camera stores have classes and so does the community college.
  • Got to a local camera store and ask them if they can suggest a good book for learning about your camera.
  • Cloudy days actually have better lighting for outdoor photos so don't think you just need to have a sunny day.
Good luck!
