I don't want to spend loads of money on flower pots this year, and I want some hanging baskets. So I was thinking of just using a regular pot and putting rope to hang it up.

Maybe using a plastic coffee pot, by drilling some small holes in the bottom of it?

I guess once the flowers come in you really cannot see the basket lol but it might look a bit strange to see coffee cans hanging around my yard!

any other ideas?

Why not spray paint the coffee cans - I think it would make it look more uniform... JMHO!

Actually I was in the dollar tree yesterday getting birthday cards, and they had hanging baskets with the rope. So I bought 10 of them in green and brown.

Check out your local dollar tree, some of the deals there are awesome, they even had seed 20/$1.00.

Yesterday when I was at the salvation army, I found a little tightly woven basket that's going to be perfect for a planter. The holes allow drainage, but it's held together tight enough to hold soil. Of course, I don't know exactly how you're hanging yours--the hendle would probably not work. But some baskets might look cute, all together with flowers in them. I'm going to line the sides of a few looser-woven ones with saran wrap or paper bags or something.
