Ok girls. I need your help (please)

Dh and I are tackling a major kitchen and dining room make over project this weekend. We both have our ideas on what we should do with this space. I think they are both great ideas, but want a neutral take on it too, just to see if maybe someone else has an even BETTER idea.

Ok, currently our dining room is red...it won't be for long, so overlook that!!!

We want to put a window treatment on these windows and door. They currently have white blinds on them (that we are planning on removing). We are leaning towards panting the walls a warm olive color and getting some nice black dining room furniture to match.

What do you think we should do with these windows? (including the door?)

Any and all input welcome!

THANKS!

It depends on the effect you want. I'm not a fan of olive (and it tends to wash people out), but the black furniture will give the room more of a sleek, contemporary look - therefore, if you want to avoid a sterile, clinical feel, I'd put something softer in the windows - curtains, perhaps. You could put wood blinds up to keep the sleekness, or go in between and put up the honeycomb Duettes.

I love the idea of olive walls and black furniture! It seems so classic. I still like the idea of wooden blinds or custom wooden shutters, and maybe a window treatment on top of all the windows. Something that wouldn't impede with going in and out of the back door. Good Luck!

Okay. Here's what I would do...for what it's worth.

I would go floor to ceiling with the curtains on either side of the door, and as close to the door as you can get. Go up as high as you can with the curtain rods too, so that the windows feel larger. I'd make that fabric a solid color. Maybe a black mid-weight fabric (silk, or sheer, depending on how much privacy you want), but a solid color to match your dining table.

Then, I would go over those with a pretty toile or other large printed Italian-looking fabric (Tapestry maybe? If you're going with an Italian decor as I think you may be.) which would be pulled back away from the door, "puddling" on the floor, at the corner of the wall outside the windows (leading into the dining area from the door), and tie those back with huge Italian tassles!! As for the door, maybe a Roman shade done in the same fabric as the "puddling" drapes?

Just my $.02...

ETA: If you ARE going "Italian" you've got to have some ironwork! I'd do like a pretty iron sconce over the door, and then add some that match around the rest of the room.

I agree with the floor to ceiling window treatments in either a sheer black or the same color as the walls. If you are going with a sleek, clean look, I would stay pretty monochromatic. Maybe put scarves over the windows that are longer on the outsides of the windows than the insides.

From what I can see of the lighting fixture, I would replace it with something wrought iron and I'd also be tempted to paint the door black to match the furniture.

When we replaced our sliding glass door with french doors, I went with the doors that have the blinds inside the glass... AWESOME. If you ever replace anything that is the way to go. No dogs or children playing in the vertical blinds and no dusting.

For your situation, since I assume you don't want to replace perfectly good doors & windows, I would go for a roman shade in an almond or brown color. I found one online (they are pricey but you get the idea).

I like all the ideas so far. BUT I LOVE RED, why are you changing it, may I ask?

Also please please don't put curtains on the actual door, they are such a pain get stuck on the door, dirty form being stuck and so forth.. (just my plain old couple of cents)

Yes you may ask Little Sis!

We are warming up our kitchen to earth tones and want our dining room, which is adjacent and connected to our kitchen to reflect the same feeling. The red, as much as I loved it when I bought the house, just doesn't fit anymore!
