out of a house. My parents have their house up for sale. My mom has medical issues she refuses to deal with and I think she is going into renal failure. The house smells like pee a very strong ammonia smell. The smell is in her room (bedding and clothes) and also very strong in the laundry room. She tries to hide the fact she has a problem by putting the soiled items in the washer and then leaving them.
They've had a few people interested in the house but the smell stops people. Is there anything that will help with the smell short of throwing my mom out of the house?
My mom will not seek medical help for the problem (I've been fighting this battle for years and I have finally given up. If she wants to slowly kill herself it's up to her). I feel really bad for my dad he needs this place sold.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I was told for cigarette smoke to place several dishes filled with ammonia in them and place them around the house. This advice was from a former bar owner who did this every evening after they closed and he said it worked. We place the dishes around my moms house when we were trying to sell it. Its worth a try for the urine smell too.

The only thing I can think of is an air ionizer. Plug it in & leave it going.

Vinegar is known to help with urine odor. Setting out bowls for it to absorb the odor, or using a spray bottle of it. But, it sounds like you will indeed need to wipe down everything, and perhaps remove carpet and padding. Add vinegar to her laundry as well. Then, open all the windows! And, when a potential buyer arrives, you might have some chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven, or a simmering pot of water, cinnamon and nutmeg on the stove. HTH.

I would definately start opening up the windows, letting in tons of fresh air and cleaning with buckets of water + vinegar...the floors etc If you don't get to the source though (clothing, bedding, laundry) no amt of vinegar in bowls is going to help IMO. The sources need to be cleaned. Is she living there while they're trying to sell it? If so, and I mean no offense, but the house won't sell if it stinks.

If the carpets are fairly clean other than the smell, you might try sprinkling baking soda on the carpets, leave it overnight and then vacuum well. That is a natural remedy to try, otherwise, Febreze does work on fabrics and carpets that can't be washed in the washing machine.

I don't think any amount of cleaning is going to help if she is still having these problems.

I agree with the vinegar also along with getting the windows opened.
