I am looking for ideas on things I can sew for charity. I have a ton of fabric everywhere and work as a professional seamstress from home but I am unsure of what I could make for others. I thought of premie Christening/burial gowns. I know... very morbid I feel so bad for little sick babies... Can anyone think of something else?

Check out project Linus, they take small quilt for preemie babies, and babies with AIDS. Also alot of charities will take small quilts, like some of the Childrens Service Agencies, and hospitals. They give these to children that are displaced by their circumstances. You would be suprised how many children appreciate a small blanket of their own. ( it gives them security ) Hope some of these help.

Wow, I envy your sewing ability!!!! Simple A line skirts or pinafores for young girls are always useful, if you want to move up from preemies. If you have the appropriate material, then skirts or blouses suitable for a woman going on a job interview would be wonderful. Many of the shelters need them to help their clients to be appropriately dressed for success as they start their new lives.

Good Luck and I'm sure whatever you decide to make, it will be appreciated by whoever has the good fortune to get it!

Here's a link I saved earlier this year for a sewing charity project.

you could check to see if there is a local photographer who works with the charity Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a foundation that has volunteer photographers offer bereavement photography services to a family who has lost their little loved one. You could offer handmade gowns or blankets to the families to include in the photograph, and then they could use it as they see fit.

I know you said you had tons of fabric around, but I did see a project once where a christening gown was made out of a wedding dress, and I have seen wedding dresses available in goodwills (where I bought my wedding dress actually!) for very reasonable prices - probably a lot cheaper than buying the fabric per yard, especially when you'd get pretty detailing included.

Bless your heart for wanting to help others in need...

You could also check with local churches to see if any are going on missions trip in the near future (or if they have connections with missions teams) and see if there are any items that would be of need.

YES! Project Linus! Project Linus National Headquarters My son Tommy is medically fragile and frequently in the hospital for surgeries and illnesses. We get a Project Linus blanket every few months in a care package from a support group I belong to. Most recently, blankets were also given to my older children because I had to be away with Tommy in the hospital. They found the blankets to be such a comfort!

Wow what great ideas! I'm so excited to start....something. I'm definitely going to check out Project Linus and I like the idea of clothes for women trying to get jobs. Also, donating blankies to the photographer is a great idea. I was a member of that sewing review website, I'll have to look at that again. Thanks so much ladies

That is very kind of you!

I do know that, in my area at least, that the local police department is always looking for people to make blankets for kids who's parents may have had some trouble with the law. Or kids that have been involved in traffic accidents. Especially when things happen late at night and they are scrambling to find foster care or family members to take the children. They try to give the child a blanket.
