Congrats. Your children will be about the same ages apart as mine! 2.5 years later, it is working out great.

We have small rooms and no playroom or basement. All of their posesions are in their rooms. I would go with the toddler bed for floor (play) space. Only thing is you can't store much more than the plastic shoe boxes under the bed. You would be amazed how much you can store in closets with the help of plastic bins and drawers and the cloest organizers!

I would also reccomend that you switch dd to her new bed before the baby comes so she doesn't think that the baby is taking it away from her.

I would buy a toddler bed for the older one, and use the better mattress for it. Since the older child is heavier, she will need more support than an infant. So for example, if the crib has a great mattress, use that on the toddler bed, and get a cheapie 29.00 to go in the crib.

I would also use the toddler bed as long as possible. Get one with minimal " surroundings" meaning don't get the one we had, with a castle shaped headboard and a footboard you could sit on. It was too long( as long as a twin bed) and took up too much room .

If you child is small, I would keep the toddler bed until at least kindergarten.

another thing you can do is check Ikea - they have some interesting beds. we got a short loft bed. It's like a bunk bed, only NO bottom bunk, and it's way lower than a bunk bed. Under neath it the kids can get under there and play, spread out thier barbies, pollys ect. So they still have floor space to play, and a bed.

Also- I'm not sure if I would keep an infant in with my toddler, or with myself. Everyone needs thier sleep. Wouldn't an infant waking up at night, wake your older child too?? I try to think what I would do if I had an infant now, with my house set up, and I think I'd put a portable crib or pack and play in the hallway. just so when baby cries, she wouldn't wake anyone but me. just a thought.

My 5 month old sleeps in the room with my 6 yr old in K, and does fine. I waited to put the baby in their room until he slept through the night.
