My 4 year old and 2 year old boys share a room. I got them toddler beds (the race car ones) for $60 each at a Children's Consignment Store. (2 years apart) Their room is small so I wanted the toddler beds to give them more room. In the room is also a rug with streets on it for them to play on and the dresser they share. I keep their shirts hanging on the top racks in their closet and the bottom of their closet is lined with bookshelves & hooks, etc for their toys. They have double closet doors so I can put on the childproof lock to keep them out of there during naptime & at bedtime.
We turned our "formal living" area into their playroom. It's right off the entry and VERY open to our living room. We put the train table in there with under the bed tubs under it for their cars. They mostly play in the 'playroom' or living room, but occasionally when they're too loud they are sent to their rooms so I'm glad they have room to play in there as well.
One of the main reasons I went for the toddler beds is because I knew we'd be moving at some point once we had 3 kids and we'd have 2 beds in one room. Although we know 2 twin beds fit (we saw it in another identical house when house hunting), we also know that 2 twin beds make the room look smaller and we wanted it to feel bigger when we put the house on the market.
Oh, my son is almost 5 and still fits in the toddler bed fine. He is small for his age, but I do plan on him staying in it for another year at least. When my baby is 2 we MAY let him move in and get a twin bed for my oldest at that point. Hopefully we'll move before then.
