Okay so my 14 year old dd wants to start quilting. I was ready for her wanting to start dating, troubles with friends, what to wear to the prom but this? I have no idea how to quilt or even where to start. Anyone who can point me in a direction, any direction as long as it leads to quilting please respond!

Google 9 patch quilts. They are about as simple as they come. You can put them in any color. You can use scraps or buy fabric. She can cut out the squares ... or you can get her some rotary cutter and a mat, which is a bit easier.

And have fun!

I agree with Mel. I pretty much taught myself by researching online different things. I have also learned a lot of things from this website *free quilting patterns, free quilt blocks, quilter techniques Also check out some of the bigger craft stores and see if they have classes or something, if you want to try that.

I would call your local fabric shop and get her signed up for sewing lessons, and then go from there..........they often offer quilting classes too.

good luck

I agree with everyone else. When I first started I cut out four inch squares and sewed them together, added batting and backing and tied them together with yarn. I made it 13 years ago and it has been passed down from boy to boy to boy.

For all of your input and Frogella for the book offer! She has taken sewing classes and probably knows more about it than I do! I did get a garbage bag full of squares from freecycle so I guess we'll just dig in and see how it goes.

She can make a wall-hanging for her room. This is a fun way to learn to quilt!

She can design anyway she wants.

Would she be satisfied with doing a knotted blanket?

Usually I find three or four fleece baby blankets at the dollar store (entire investment - $4). I then trim off the finished edges and cut the blanket into equal triangles. If I remember correctly, I can get six blocks out of each blanket. I then cut fringe into all four sides of the blocks - the same number of cuts on each block. Arrange the blocks in the pattern you want. Start using the fringe to tie the blocks together.

I tend to put the blanket together so the blocks are double-layers and contrasting. I then tie one block on the bottom to the opposing block on the top and visa versa. This gives a nice multicolored fringe and a nice thick blanket. However, that might also be a bit too complicated for a first attempt, so you decide.
