I am full of these lately. You all probably think that this is the first time that I have done laundry by myself!

How do you get the musty smell out of your bath towels?

Everytime I wash the bath towels they smell just fine and fresh. But once we use them and they get wet we smell like a big old musty pit! I use liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets plus dry them extra long. How do you get the smell out?

I eas using vinegar a while ago and don't remember what it was like. I will have to try it again. Even though you can't really smell it every once in a while you can and if dh smells it all he will throw a fit! LOL

Thanks for the suggestion!

Do you have hard water? That can keep your laundry from rinsing clean.

I have the same problem with towels sometimes. It usually happens because the water wasn't hot enough when they were washed. We have lot of people using hot water during the day for baths or the dishwasher, etc. If I go do a load of towels after the dishwasher has run or one of the kids has taken a bath, the water won't be hot enough to get them clean smelling. Or I'll forget I have a load in the washer and it sits there a few hours before I put them in the drier or on the line. If they smell at all dank when I take them out of the washing machine, I'll just re-wash them. No matter how I try to freshen them up in the drier they alway smell stinky once we use them.

I don't like the smell vinegar leaves in the laundry, so I use Borax if I want to give it a boost. Otherwise I have to double rinse to get rid of the vinegar smell.

My rags get musty smelling if they sit wet and don't dry out. Then it spreads to all the laundry. Bleach works for me.

I've always used vinegar ( I put it in the compartment where the softner goes) and I've NEVER had a problem with my laundry smelling like it once out of the dryer.

Good Luck ~ we get that smell too and I HATE it!

Wash the towels in the hottest water possible for their color/type and if you can use bleach, definately use some (1/2 cup to a cup). If you can't use bleach on them, use some white vinegar. I always put it in the wash water as well as the rinse water. There is no 'smell' on my laundry when it's wet...and definately not when it dries. It's just like using vinegar to clean - it doens't leave a lingering odor. At least for me it doesn't. Make sure to dry them really, really, really well.

Good luck!

No we don't.

Thanks for the tips ladies!

I do wash them in the hottest water possible and dry for as long as I can. I am going to "secretly" try the vinegar. We will see how that goes...

I have never used fabric softener, bleach, vinegar or dryer sheets and I have never had a problem. You just have to make sure that your towels are spread out enough to dry between uses and wash them after a couple of uses.
