Surely it does for us, I dont pay a dime at the stores for fruits or veggies from spring to late fall! One of the things we like to do is pumpkins to, we give them as gifts, trade them for other foods and what is left over, the bus's come with the lil guy's and gals from the local school and pick their own!!!

Even taking in account water, seeds, compost that I had brought it, last year, my garden totally paid for itself and more. This year ... not so much. I had a sorry little garden this year. At least my fruit trees are picking up the slack! But it still is a labor of love and I wouldn't do it if I I didn't love doing it.

Sometimes it does, but not for me this year. My raccoons enjoyed 4 rows of corn though, among other issues I had.

Absolutely!
I planted my first vegetable garden this year and even though it was more of an experemental thing (getting to know the soil...) the money I saved on bell peppers alone already more than paid for my expenses.
Produce is soo expensive around here, and fresh stuff out of your garden tastes much better anyways.

I was wondering the same thing. I rent an apartment, so if I want a garden I have to plant everything in pots, but I was thinking that maybe next year I would try. Maybe I'll ask around for people giving away planting pots and that won't be an expense.

What kinds of plants produce the most bang for your buck? Any ideas?

I just dug up enough onions and potatoes to last us until Christmas.
I have at least 6 mos. worth of peppers and green and yellow beans in the freezer.
We had fresh spinich and lettuce for about 3 months.
We had lots of zucchini (and I only had 2 plants).
And the tomatoes! I have enough sauce and dehydrated for a year, and there are many more still on the vines.
I haven't dug the carrots yet, but I pulled a few out, and it looks like a good crop.
This is all organic food, and would cost hundreds if I had to buy it.
Yes, my garden was worth it.
