Rather than carve pumpkins, we decorate them with permanent markers. This is easier and faster than carving, the pumpkins last longer, even little kids can do it and you probably have permanent markers lying around the house already so you don't have to buy those cheap carving sets. Also you can still use the pumpkins seeds and meat after the season is over.

*budget: cost of pumpkin $2-$5
*resources: permanent markers. We just use the black ones we already have, but you can buy them in all sorts of colors now for <$10
*time: 5-15 minutes

Last year we painted ours.

Cost: Free (got from SO work) But this year 2.49 aldi's
Materials: Paint (from my son's craft closet). or 0.99 a color at Michael's Craft Store

Time: 0-1 hour

Just paint the pumpkin, (also last year it rained) and so my DS was excited to paint it again.

I got the bright idea to force my husband into the pumpkin carving fun....

I should have known he looked a little too excited about it later in the day

He outlined his design then used his handheld POWER DRILL to drill holes all around it.......so it looks kinda like a luminary

I'll post a pix later

1. Budget for pumpkins: $6, we normally don't have to buy them we have friends that grow them and give us Free ones each year.

2. Imigination for the faces and pencil to draw the face on the pumpkins & pencils we have on hand or DH always gets them from customers at work.

3. Time to draw on, scoop out the inside and carve the face maybe 1 hour.

4. Finished product, this picture is a couple of yrs. old.

My tip goes along with Swishina's:

Instead of just drawing on the pumpkins, what about doing that, but then finding materials around your home to hotglue onto the pumpkins: Some examples:
old easter grass, construction paper, or raffia from a gift basket - hair
button, small shells, small pebbles - earrings
old baby barrettes to decorate the hair
Stuff like that!

Budget:
pumpkins - $3-5 per person
permanent markers - $3
accesories - NOTHING!!!

Time to do: 30 minutes or so.

My parents always did pumpkin carving as part of a "Family Night."
We would decorate pumpkins together than have a treat like homemade cookies and cider! It was fun!
