I would let them pick a colour (blue, green, pick, red, etc.), but I would narrow down to three shades of that colour. Then they could pick the specific one they wanted.

My kids all picked their own color, oldest DS's room is a pale gray, oldest DD's room is a bright orange, the younger kids share a room its painted sage green.
