Well, DH and I just found out on Mother's Day that we are expecting our second baby.*So excited* DD will be 2 when the new baby arrives and we are planning on having the baby in our room for a while in a co-sleeper.

However, at some point the new baby will move into a crib. And then we will have two kids in one 9 by 9 room. (The crib being in our room is not an option we want to consider )I think that DD should move into a twin bed since the toddler bed won't last too long and the bedroom will only be for sleeping. But DH thinks it will be cramped and she will have no room to play with the twin bed, crib and dresser in the room (although she always plays in the living room).

Do your kids just have a bedroom for sleeping or do they play mostly there too?
What would you go for - a twin or toddler bed - when the time comes for DD to move up?

My kids stayed in toddler beds until they were 6 & 7 yrs old. I guess my kids are on the small side, but they still fit fine. I always liked toddler beds because they are smaller and take up less room.

Congrats on the pregnancy!!! Seems like you just had Kaylee the other day

Can the side be taken off of the baby bed and used a toddler bed?

I think that if it could not be taken off and used, I would go straight to a twin bed (maybe even bunk beds for later use for both of them).

My kids only have beds in their room (all clothes get hung up, so no dressers are needed either)....I have at least 2 kids to a room (I have 8 kids) and they play in a different room......our rooms are very small also!

Well, if she can stay in a toddler bed until she is 6, then it might be worth it.

The crib does convert to a toddler bed, but we will be using the crib for the next baby. It would probably be cheaper to buy Kaylee's next bed than another crib.

It does seem like it - I think that is what has us both so nervous!

in my boys room, there is one toddler bed for Blake, a twin bed for Trace, a dresser that they share and beside each bed is some sort of little table, Trace has a little Pooh desk about the size of a cookie sheet for his night table and Blake has the toolbench. The tools are all scattered now so we use the bottom shelves for their books and put his cup on top in case he gets thirsty at night. They usually play in the living room but we have a huge closet near their room so thats where the toy box and coloring table are.

My 4 year old and 2 year old boys share a room. I got them toddler beds (the race car ones) for $60 each at a Children's Consignment Store. (2 years apart) Their room is small so I wanted the toddler beds to give them more room. In the room is also a rug with streets on it for them to play on and the dresser they share. I keep their shirts hanging on the top racks in their closet and the bottom of their closet is lined with bookshelves & hooks, etc for their toys. They have double closet doors so I can put on the childproof lock to keep them out of there during naptime & at bedtime.

We turned our "formal living" area into their playroom. It's right off the entry and VERY open to our living room. We put the train table in there with under the bed tubs under it for their cars. They mostly play in the 'playroom' or living room, but occasionally when they're too loud they are sent to their rooms so I'm glad they have room to play in there as well.

One of the main reasons I went for the toddler beds is because I knew we'd be moving at some point once we had 3 kids and we'd have 2 beds in one room. Although we know 2 twin beds fit (we saw it in another identical house when house hunting), we also know that 2 twin beds make the room look smaller and we wanted it to feel bigger when we put the house on the market.

Oh, my son is almost 5 and still fits in the toddler bed fine. He is small for his age, but I do plan on him staying in it for another year at least. When my baby is 2 we MAY let him move in and get a twin bed for my oldest at that point. Hopefully we'll move before then.

I normally don't recommend toddler beds but I'd go for it since the room is small and they are sharing.

My girls don't have many toys in their room. My oldest has some of her special toys and stuffed animals. My youngest only has stuffed animals. I use our basement as a playroom. It works out great!

Congrats, btw

if you could get a cheap toddler bed used, I would do that until the baby can get out of the crib. That way, you can get bunkbeds at that point!

My 3 boys share a room that has a bunkbed and a baby bed in the room, and a changing table. The dresser is in the closet under the hanging clothes. Another way to save on not needing a dresser is underbed storage boxes that slide out to put under the crib. I use those too!

Congrats on your pregnancy!!

If you plan on staying where you are at I would recommend a bed with a pull out trundle bed as well. Then once the baby has outgrown the crib you can use it. Then when the kids are up you can pop the trundle under the bed and they will have room to play.
