Work at Home Ideas: Freelance Photographer
An editorial photographer has his or her work published in books and magazines, as opposed to the portrait photographer who works from a studio. The editorial photographer has fewer startup costs due to the fact that an office isn't needed. Editorial photography is needed everywhere, and payments for a single image can range from $25 on up to thousands. The amateur photographer getting started in the business will start on the lower end and build up a portfolio of images.
Startup Costs: $1000+ if you don't have a professional-grade camera. You will need a basic SLR camera to begin with, which will cost $450+. Many photographers have switched to a digital format, whereby a digital SLR camera can be quite expensive ($1000+) Other costs include film and processing and marketing costs. Once your business becomes established, you will want to invest in lenses, computer software, printers and scanners, etc.
Training Needed: Basic knowledge of photography, including design principles. Some photographers have degrees and formal training, others have learned their trade on the job.
Marketing: A great resource for freelance editorial photographers is 2000 Photographer's Market : 2,000... this book includes thousands of places to contact to sell your images. It is really a must-have for all freelancers. You will also need business cards, labels for your slides, and a stocklist to send to prospective clients. It is good to contact companies in advance, and ask for their photo wish lists. That way, you can tailor your photography to their specific needs.
Once you have an established portfolio, you can consider marketing your images through a stock agency. These agencies will handle all your submissions and administrative work for you. Their cut is usually half of the image selling price.
