Work at Home Ideas: Gift Basket Business

For those with a creative flair and a knack for putting things together, this home-based business can be both fun and profitable.  You can design attractive pre-made gift baskets, or customize them according the wishes of the gift-giver and the lucky recipient.

Getting started: This is a great business to start part-time.  You can invest as much or as little time as is convenient for you.  To get started, you'll need more than just the materials to make your baskets.  You'll need a carefully thought-out business plan and marketing strategies. For more information on writing a business plan, see How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business.

What to charge:  Gift baskets can range anywhere from $15 on up to the hundreds.  What you charge depends on the type of basket, its contents and the work in involved in putting it together.

Marketing:  Have clever business cards printed and include them with each basket that gets sent.  Advertise in the yellow pages, or on the internet.  You may want to participate in craft fairs and shows. You can market your baskets to individuals and/or businesses.  It may be easiest to start with individuals, and branch out into the corporate market.  Many businesses purchase gifts for employees, clients, prospects, etc.  Since this business relies heavily on repeat customers, this can be a very profitable area to get into.

Resources:  For more information contact the Gift Association of America, 612 W. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018, (610) 861-9445. Subscribe to Gift Basket Review ($29.95 for a one-year subscription), Festivities Publications Inc., 815 Haines St., Jacksonville, FL 32206, (800) 729-6338.
