Work at Home Ideas: Web Designer
Since web designers often work out of the home, it is a perfect career for a stay-at-home mom. With internet use growing like crazy, the demand for this type of service will also be growing.
Qualifications: You'll want to have a good grasp on general computer knowledge, plus HTML programming, although many of the new web design software packages don't require it. Graphic Design skills are also important. Classes through community ed and at the local vocational schools are a good start, although some web designers are entirely self-taught.
Start-up Costs: You will a computer, internet access, a scanner and appropriate software. If you already have a computer, you are probably looking at $500. If you are starting from scratch, plan on spending at least $1500-2000.
Marketing: Word of mouth is a great way to get started. You will also want to compile a portfolio to present to perspective clients, and a list of websites you have designed for them to visit. A low-cost way to get the word out there would also be local newspaper or classified advertising.
What to Charge: Rates can vary from $20 to $150 per hour. What you can charge will depend you your level of expertise, and the going rate in your community. Do some research to see what other people in your area are charging, and for what specific services.
