This halloween craft combined two crafts I've done with my kids to make one easy homemade Halloween decoration – ghost window clings! Last year we made ghost window clings using a glue gun. Since then, we've also made homemade window clings using white glue colored with food coloring. White glue doesn't require a glue gun and is safer for young children, but those window clings were made on a piece of transparency. I wanted to see if I could make a white glue window cling on a plate, and only use things I had on hand.
Guess what – it worked! So, we made these ghost window clings two ways. One of them was based on a ghost drawing my preschooler did, and traced onto a transparency with glue. I made the other window cling by sketching a ghost outline in white glue on a glass plate. In both methods, it was just as easy to peel the dried glue off. So, if you don't have a transparency, go ahead and try this on a glass plate.
All you need for this Halloween kids' craft is white glue, a permanent marker, and a transparency or plate.
Outline your ghost shape in white glue on the transparency or plate. Allow it to dry.
Fill in the dried ghost shape with lots of glue. Allow to dry several hours or overnight. We did this twice so our ghosts would be thicker.
Once it's dry, peel the ghost off the plate or transparency. You might need to use the tip of a butter knife to lift up the edge. Draw a face on your ghost with the permanent marker, if desired.
Stick it on the window!
The ghost window clings will be flexible, unlike the ones I made from hot glue. If your window is very cold, they may become brittle, so be careful when removing them.
You can remove and play with your ghost window clings all you want and they will keep sticking. We also tried them out on the mirror. Maggie is making this “ghost face” in all the pictures I took.
Update: We also used this technique to make homemade snowman window clings as a christmas craft!
Oh, this is a wonderful idea! We’ve made little snowman ornaments out of glue on wax paper, but I never thought about using them for window clings! Thank you for sharing!
Great idea! My son wants to be a ghost for halloween… I know, kind of a boring costume but he won’t give up on it so I guess I have to give in 🙂 These will be a fun activity to go with it!

Love this idea! I have made window clings out of window tint (that stuff that you tint your car windows with) but never though of using white glue!

I made the version with hot glue last year. Almost broke my window getting them off after the sun had shone on them warming them just enough to really stick to the windows.
Be careful. I won’t be doing it again.

Yes, Kim, I have used food coloring to color white glue and made colored window clings. They worked out great!
