A Taste of Tradition: The Amish Sweet Bread
The Amish community, known for its rich traditions and handcrafted goods, excels in the culinary arts, with bread-making being a prime example. Among their repertoire, the Amish sweet bread stands out—a light, fluffy, subtly sweet delight that pairs wonderfully with your morning coffee or as an afternoon treat.
Amish Sweet Bread: The Bread Machine Version
While traditional Amish bread is usually baked in the oven, we’ve adapted this recipe to cater to those who prefer using a bread machine, making the process simpler and more accessible without compromising the authentic taste.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Amish Bread Recipe for the Bread Machine
2 3/4 C. flour
1/4 C. canola oil (I used vegetable oil)
1 tsp. bread machine yeast
1/4 C. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 C. + 2 Tbsp. warm water
A recipe for Amish bread for the bread machine may be pretty ironic, but it’s also pretty tasty! For this recipe, set your bread machine settings to light crust. Makes a 1 1/2 lb. loaf.
Once baked, remove your bread from the machine and let it cool on a wire rack before serving. This Amish sweet bread is fantastic when served warm with a bit of butter or your favorite jam.
Tips for Perfect Amish Sweet Bread Every Time
While the recipe is straightforward, a few tips can ensure your Amish sweet bread turns out perfect every time.
- Make sure your water is warm, not hot. The ideal temperature is 110 degrees F.
- Always use fresh yeast. Expired yeast may not produce the desired rise.
- Avoid over-baking. The bread should be a golden color, not brown.

You’re right, mine is in a cupboard and has been there for years unused. I’m going to get it out. This sounds so good.
Katie B. says
Can you use regular yeast or does it have to be bread machine yeast?
Kimberly Danger says
Katie, I’ve always used bread machine yeast. I believe it’s designed for the rapid rising cycle of a bread machine.

Ann says
What type of flour did you use?
Jacky says
@Karen…check the thrift stores and craigslist.org to find a bread machine. We’ve seen them for free on craigslist many times. We picked up one for $5 from a thrift store. It was a basic model. We then found a friend who had a tricked out super duper bread machine collecting dust. They gave it to us and I’ve been making a loaf every 7-10 days since January ☺

I made this bread today and it turned out great! I did use more flour because I thought it looked rather sticky! I also used regular flour because that is all I had and the recipe did not state which kind anyhow! I would guess I used 3c. of flour! Yummy!

Glad you liked it!

how long did it take for the loaf of bread to bake? My machine has so many different settings and I tried it and I do not think it baked long enough. thanks
Joanna says
how can I convert this to gluten free Amish Bread?
Stephanie says
Joanna I know this is months later but I made this tonight with my gluten free flour (GF Jules) and it worked out really nicely and everyone loved it. The only thing I did different was substitute the gluten flour for my gluten free and used the gluten free setting on my bread machine. Good Luck.

I’m gojng to try it today with Cup4Cup to see how it comes out. I also use a gf flour mix recipe I discovered from Alton Brown quite often – plan on trying this recipe next time using it. Thanks for this recipe

Linda Keffer says
Is the flour used, regular flour, or bread flour?
alex says
I use bread flour for the bread recipes and yes they are softer
Chelsea says
Hi there, wat setting do i put on? Basic or sandwich? Thanks.
Juanita says
Did you let the bread machine mix it for you?
Sharon Berry says
You do not have directions on how to add the ingredients to the bread machine? Please clearify, in what order to add to machine.
Thanks.
Arleen says
It depends on your bread machine. Check the manual. Mine goes: water, eggs, butter or oil
Then salt, sugar
Then flour(s), any other dry ingredients
Then i make a dent and put in the yeast
Nuts or raisins etc if using go around the edge so they don’t mix in too soon. Or you can add at the first beep. But i often don’t hear it.
Emily says
I know this is a stupid question but I do not see it posted up top. Is there a certain way to put it all in the machine or just throw it all in.
Arleen says
Bread machines can vary in the order but usually the wet ingredients goes first. Then salt, sugar and flour. Yeast last by making a small dent in the center of the flour. If your adding fruit or nuts, you would do so at the beep or scatter them around the edges of the flour incase your worried about missing the beep.

The liquid to flour is off…the one cup of water is usually the amount for three cups of flour ,but now it calls for 1/4 cup of oil plus the two Tbs.of water…at least for me… I mostly use the machine for the kneading process, and than bye in the oven foe loaf pan or formed loaves….hope this helps
