Grandma’s Chocolate Brownie Recipe

Making brownies from scratch is much easier than you think.   This chocolatey delight comes to you from my own mother, AKA Grandma.  A neighbor brought her these when they moved into their very first home before I was even born, and she’s been making them ever since.  Now they’re known as “Grandma’s Yummy Brownies.”   Don’t skip the special frosting recipe, either… they’re all part of the goodness.  After trying this recipe, you may never buy a boxed brownie mix again!

Brownie Ingredients:

  • 1/2 C. butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 5 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 2/3 C. flour

Brownie Instructions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix above ingredients until well-combined. Grease a 9×9 glass pan. Spread brownie batter in the pan (it will be very thick) and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Brownie Frosting Recipe:

2 2/3 C. powdered sugar
1/3 C. cocoa powder
1/3 C. butter
4 Tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Allow brownies to cool completely before frosting them. Store in an airtight container.  My family loves these, and I’m sure you will too!

Do you use a mixer for the frosting?
Is the butter melted for the brownies or the frosting?

Yes, I use a mixer. I do melt the butter slightly.

    Thanks for posting this recipe!
I’ve got it bookmarked and have made it any number of times. It’s delicious and always turns out beautifully! I’ve recommended it to others, and make it often when I need a quick, easy, and well-received dessert.
I usually do 1 1/2 recipe for my 9″ square pan.
Also, I find the icing far too sweet for my taste …. BUT it does really come together beautifully if sprinkled with sea salt. WOW!
