Kids Craft: Scene Drawings

January 31, 2011 by Susie Chadwick Leave a Comment

Here’s a simple craft idea to keep your kids occupied and their imaginations busy – scene drawings! With a little help from me, my three year old enjoys drawing her own animals and other pictures and incorporating them into the scenes I created for her.

We do this activity when I want her to sit quietly and do something on her own with minimal supervision – and usually while the baby is asleep.  I often have to give her suggestions of animals or other drawings to add, and she likes to show me her drawing after each new thing. But, for the most part, this art activity is an enjoyable quiet activity for both of us when I need to get something done.

After getting out some scratch paper and crayons, we come up with a scene to draw.   Above, we drew a Zoo.  My preschooler loves to draw animals, so this is her favorite scene drawing.  In this example, I drew big leaves and over-sized grass so my preschooler could draw Bugs.   For more kids scene drawing examples and ideas, see below.

Here’s the completed Bugs scene.

Here are a few of the other scene drawings we’ve done.

The Hundred Acre Wood. I just drew the river and a couple trees and told her what it was. Maggie added all the characters, Rabbit's garden, and a few houses.
The Prehistoric World. Families of Stegosaurus and Triceratops.

The Circus tent and train.

Other scene drawing ideas include: ocean or beach scene, the forest, mountains, your home, your child’s room, a place you’ve visited, the grocery store, the lake, a holiday scene, the backyard, or a school.
