Ice Cream in a Bag with SNOW
Recently, I shared my recipe for making homemade ice cream in a bag in our forum. Ever since we tried it, my preschooler has been begging to do it again. So today, we made more homemade ice cream, this time using snow instead of crushed ice! The kids were so excited to make ice cream with snow. We also tried a new ice cream flavor – cherry chocolate chip.
*Note: This is not snow cream. This recipe does not involve eating snow. We just used snow to freeze the ice cream.*
Here’s the recipe:
Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag with Snow
1 cup milk (any % you like, or even cream)
3 tablespoons sugar
a few drops almond flavoring (this gives it a cherry flavor; almond and cherry trees are related)
2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips
snow
1/4 cup salt (we used table salt, but really any salt with do)
After mixing the milk, sugar, flavoring, and chocolate chips in a small Ziploc bag. You might want to double-bag it. Then, we hurried outside in the freezing air and scooped clean-ish snow into the gallon sized bag. Fill the bag about halfway full with snow. Next, we added the salt to the snow in the gallon sized bag, put the smaller bag of ice cream mixture inside, and sealed it tight, squeezing all the air out.
Mix and knead the bags until the milk mixture solidifies – about 5 to 10 minutes.
Rinse the smaller Ziploc bag in the sink before opening it – you don’t want your snow ice cream to taste salty! Pour or squeeze it into a bowl and enjoy your homemade ice cream with snow.
Homemade Snow Cream
This recipe uses actual snow. IMPORTANT: Use fresh, clean snow only.
Snow Cream Ingredients:
- Snow
- Vanilla
- Sweetened condensed milk
First, scoop some fresh, clean snow into a large bowl. Next, drizzle a little bit of vanilla over the snow. Drizzle sweetened condensed milk over the snow next, and fold all ingredients together. If necessary, add more snow.

Do you think epsom salt could be used? Looking forward to trying this with my kids.

Yes – the original recipe called for rock salt, but I didn’t have any. We used table salt and it turned out just fine. Let us know how it goes!

I cut this recipe out of a magazine in 2011…am sending to grand-son in Reno, where they have snow..I was born and raised in Wis..we made snow ice cream all the time, but just with snow and sugar…the recipe neglects to say that you empty the smaller bag into the snow…but have found it here and will fix…thanks, miss the snow at Christmas in florida..it is going to be about 83 here today!
