Frugal Road Trips: Mom and Pop Eateries
On our road trip from Minnesota to South Carolina last year, we made it a point to only stop at independently owned restaurants — the more unique, the better! This photo is from Hillbilly Hot Dogs in Lesage, West Virginia, which is just as much a showcase of trailer-park kitsch as it is a restaurant. We found out about it on the Food Network Show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Not only did this strategy allow us to break from routine and try some new things, it helped extend our travel budget. Since non-chain restaurants can’t rely on huge national marketing campaigns, they are able to make a go by offering good food at a great value. Plus, some of our best vacation memories are from the restaurants we visited.
Find the best Mom and Pop eateries by using apps like Yelp and TripAdvisor. We rely heavily on user ratings and comments to locate the best spots and menu items.
