Family Movie Night on a Budget: Netflix Instant Downloads

April 1, 2010 by Kimberly Danger Leave a Comment

My family just got our first Blu-Ray player this week. Since we subscribe to the Netflix one-out-at-a-time program for just $8.99 per month, we can now watch movies instantly on our TV.   I know this will save us $$$ on Redbox rentals, because now we can watch as many as we want with our Netflix subscription. If you want to try it for free, here’s a link to a Free One-Month Netflix Trial.

Before you try it, this is what you’ll need to know:

  • You must have a Netflix subscription and a compatible device for your TV. Compatible devices include internet-compatible Blu-Ray players, XBox360, PS3, and coming this spring: Wii game consoles. Read more about which devices are compatible on the Netflix Site.
  • You will need an ethernet cable to stream through your Blu-Ray player. I got one at Target for about $25. It must be long enough to run from your internet router to the back of your Blu-Ray player. These cables are also available on Amazon.com for much less than Target’s price (I was in a hurry to try it, and didn’t want to wait to have it shipped).
  • The movies have generally been out for a while, so don’t expect to see new releases. That’s fine with us since we rarely make it to the theater and have missed seeing so many films. Like my husband says, “They’re still new to us.” Some of the titles I added to my instant queue were: Julie and Julia, Food Inc., and The Proposal. They also have a TON of kids’ movies and TV shows. The kids watched Bolt last night and Wall-E is in their instant Queue for today.
