Frugal Ideas for Creative Homemade Gift Wrapping, Packaging and Tags

December 17, 2010 by Susie Chadwick 1 Comment

It’s time to wrap your Christmas gifts! Looking for some frugal, but creative ways to wrap the gifts you bought this Christmas? Here are a few ideas beyond wrapping paper.

I don’t usually use gift bows because they can be expensive, and they are wasteful and bad for the earth. Then I learned how to make my own gift bows out of recycled magazine pages. Making these gift bows is easy and fun and gives your gift a little more personality.

While you’ve got your old magazines out to make homemade gift bows, considering reusing magazine pages as actual wrapping paper. That’s what Maggie did in the picture below. Then she used a scrapbooking punch to create snowflakes to decorate the gift with.

Another homemade wrapper paper option is to save brown packaging paper from gifts ordered online (I know Amazon.com packages have some!). Have your kids color on it, trace holiday cookie cutters, or stamp it with rubber stamps. Or, use it plain and tie your package up with a big ribbon, raffia, twine, or yarn, or use a homemade recycled gift bow. You can also use this idea with tissue paper, or newspaper. This is a very simple, frugal, and earth-friendly gift wrapping idea, using items you already have.

Nesting boxes such as those used in this gift topiary can be found at craft stores such as Michael’s or Jo-Ann. You can also order them from Amazon, or use different sized boxes you have on hand. For Christmas, you could add a star to the top and decorate a tower like a Christmas tree.

Here are some other frugal and creative gift wrap ideas I shared previously.
