Amazon Prime Perks: More than Free Shipping

August 29, 2018 by Kim Danger Leave a Comment

When it was first introduced, Amazon Prime was known mainly for its famous FREE 2-Day Shipping.  It’s been around since 2005, and in 2018 it has over 100 million subscribers.  However, most members aren’t aware of all the perks and benefits included in their subscriptions, some of which can result in even more savings!  Not to mention the fact you’re saving on gas since you don’t have to drive to the store. 😉   For $119 a year, you can not only take advantage of all the typical Amazon Prime benefits, you can unlock all sorts of other great savings including these perks:

Free 2-Day Shipping.  This Amazon Prime Perk is perhaps the best known, and for good reason.  If you do any sort of online shopping, you know that shipping costs, especially expedited shipping costs, can quickly add up.  This perk is available on a large majority of Amazon products, to citizens living in the contiguous United States (that excludes Hawaii).   Don’t need that perk?  How about this one:  you can sometimes choose to forgo the two-day delivery in exchange for Amazon credit that can be applied to digital purchases like books, movie rentals, etc.

Prime Video.  Perhaps the most popular Prime “perk” besides free shipping, Prime Video allows you to stream popular movies and TV show much like Netflix and Hulu.  In fact, some people have ditched their other memberships because Prime Video offers enough viewing options for them.  Plus, like the other streaming services, they offer original movies and series.  Check out  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Catastrophe.

Prime One-Day Delivery/Same Day Delivery.  If free 2-day shipping isn’t fast enough, look for items that ship even FASTER.  Yes, some things are delivered to your doorstep the day you order them.  This option is available in certain zip codes only with qualifying orders over $35. Search Prime Free Same Day and One Day to see if your area is eligible.

Prime Wardrobe.  If you’ve ever shopped companies like StitchFix, Amazon has now entered the try-before-you-buy arena with Prime Wardrobe.  Add items to your box, try on at home, and only keep what you like. Ship the rest back for free in the prepaid mailer they send to you.   Choose from women’s clothing, accessories, shoes, plus clothing for men and kids as well.
Amazon Restaurant.  Did you know that for Prime Members living in certain areas, you can get restaurants to deliver food for FREE in less than an hour?  I had no idea!  It’s not available in my zip code yet, but you can search to see if your area is covered here:  Amazon Restaurant  Available in over 17+ large metro areas like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc. with a minimum $20 purchase.
Prime Exclusive Deals.  Once you are an Amazon Prime member, you’re eligible for Prime Exclusive Deals and Savings.   Shop by category or by brand, and get in on “early access” to Lightning deals before other Amazon customers get to purchase them.  Some of the Amazon clothing brands are EXCLUSIVELY available to Prime shoppers as well:
  • Presto
  • Amazon Elements
  • Happy Belly
  • Seriously Tasty
  • Good Threads
  • Mae
  • Ella Moon
  • Arabella
  • Lark & Ro
  • Daily Ritual
Pantry Staples.  Don’t overlook the Prime Pantry section for great deals on household supplies.  Many items that ship in bulk are discounted AND have virtual coupons to “clip” to use with them.  Plus, when you select “Subscribe and Save” you can save an additional 15%.  The savings really adds up, bringing the cost of a lot of items down to less than what you’d pay in big box retailers like Target and Walmart.  On my Subscribe and Save list:  Tide Pods, and Cascade Dishwasher Detergent.  Plus, it’s a lot more convenient to have these things delivered to your doorstep than lugging them home from the store. The Pantry Staples Bestsellers List can clue you in to what others think are amazing buys as well.  There is frequently a five-item minimum to get the sale prices and free delivery.
Prime Reading.  For voracious readers, Amazon Prime is a MUST.  Click on over to the Prime Reading Department to discover some great bargains.  With your Prime Membership, you can read current issues of popular magazines.  With Kindle First Reads, Prime Members get to select one book to read among the six selected Editors’ Picks in a variety of genres such as fiction, memoir and kids’ books with the Amazon First program.  On Amazon Prime Day, you can download all six of the books that are available that month.  Prime members are also eligible for one free e-Book through the Kindle Lending Library each month (selection is limited).

Added Savings for Alexa and Echo Owners and Amazon App.  If you don’t have Alexa or Echo, ask it which deals are available to you as an Amazon Prime member.  She will list them off, pausing after each one to ask if you’d like to order.  If you don’t have one of those devices, not to worry.   The same voice-activated Amazon deals are also available on the Amazon app.

Same-Day Release Delivery.  Don’t want to wait to read your author’s new favorite book?  Amazon sometimes offers FREE release-date delivery on popular book releases.  No need to wait the typical 2 days.

Prime Outfit CompareAmazon Prime Perks: Outfit Compare

Prime Outfit Compare.  You can use “Outfit Compare” to choose an outfit for any occasion, or just to see what the “fashion expert” opinion is.  Outfit Compare is in the Amazon App under “Programs and Features” and is free for Prime members.  Just upload two photos of yourself wearing different styles, and a “fashion specialist” will respond telling you which one looks the best on you.   The response takes into account how the clothes fit you, which colors look best on you, how the outfits are styled, and what’s on trend right now — and takes just a few minutes.  (See the shirts I compared above?  I share more details in our Fashion Friday post)

Prime Now. Some stores like Whole Foods and Surdyks have partnered with Amazon to provide SAME DAY delivery on their items, and even 2-hour delivery from Whole Foods.  Plus, if you have an Amazon Prime Credit card you’ll save an additional 5% back on your Whole Foods order.  Available in 32 cities.  Shop Amazon Prime NOW

Prime Households.  This is a great feature if you have a child away at college, or another family member living elsewhere.  With Prime Households, you can up to ten people in your immediate family to your Amazon Prime Account.  You can also link two adult Amazon accounts to share eBooks, audiobooks, apps and games on your Amazon devices, and media apps.

Prime Photo. Prime Members get unlimited storage for photos, plus 5 GB for videos and documents.

Prime Music.  Think Spotify, but the Amazon version.  This music streaming service is normally $9.99 per month, but Amazon Prime members get it for $7.99 instead.
