Throw a Burger Bar Party and Ice Cream Social for Under $50 + FUN Backyard Games for Kids

What you can buy for $50 at ALDI

Last Thursday afternoon, nine active young boys converged upon our house to celebrate the last day of their second grade year.  The party included soccer at the park, hiking in the ravine, and grilling burgers.  Many of the parents thought we were brave for hosting such an event, but we had a wonderful time and created lots of special memories that these boys will be talking about for a long time to come (namely the ice cream eating contest).  It just may become an annual event!

I purchased all the food and drinks we needed for this event at ALDI for around $50.  Not only did it feed our group of hungry 8-year-old boys (plus my husband and myself) we had lots of leftovers.  No coupon clipping required!

On The Menu

  • French Fries
  • Burgers
  • Watermelon
  • Ice Cream

Build Your Own Burger Bar
Since this burger bar was for 8 year-old boys, we didn’t get too wild with the toppings.  We had two different kinds of cheese, bacon, pickles, onions, mustard, ketchup and barbecue sauce.  If adults are coming to your party, offer lettuce, tomatoes and jalapeños as well.

Ice Cream Bar
Our ice cream bar included a gallon of Neopolitan ice cream (giving the kids a few flavor options), fresh strawberries, chocolate, sprinkles, caramel, and of course, whipped cream.

Backyard Games for Kids

watermelon seed spitting contest

Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest
This classic game is always a hit, but may not be as familiar to the younger generation given the fact that seedless watermelon is so prevalent these days.  Since kids love playing with their food anyway, this is the perfect frugal backyard game.  With a measuring tape, measure the seed that goes the farthest.

Ice Cream Eating Contest
This contest is not for the faint of heart, but I promise it will be the hit of your party!   After the kiddos are finished with putting fun toppings on their ice cream, challenge them to eat the ice cream WITHOUT using spoons.  The messiest face wins!

Other Fun Backyard Games for Kids

  • Water balloon toss
  • Croquet, badminton, ladderball, bocce ball
  • DIY obstacle course
  • Messy Twister
  • Nature scavenger hunt
  • Sponge tag
  • Slip N Slide

Disclaimer:  Aldi provided gift certificates for our party.  You can win a S’mores Kit from ALDI!  Visit the Mommysavers Forum for more information.

Just got back from my Aldi run. We are heading out for a week of camping with friends and shopping Aldi makes it so affordable. We are having shrimp cocktails, lots of munchies, varietal crackers and cheese, cereals, beverages all at about half of what we would spend at a typical grocer. And the shopping experience is fantastic. Clean well organized stores with just about everything I need. Smaller store means in and out fast!! And so much less going into the waste stream. No fancy disposable signs, no wasted bags, no excessive shelving, and compact displays. Thanks Aldi for making feeding my family ecologically and economically minded!
