DIY: Homemade Liquid Soap

October 10, 2010 by Kimberly Danger 1 Comment

diy liquid hand soap

Have you ever wondered what you can do with slivers of leftover soap or the tiny bars you grab out of hotel rooms?  Here’s an idea that will help you prevent waste and use every bit of soap easily and conveniently.   Just grab your kitchen grater and a refillable bottle, and you’re good to go.

Homemade Liquid Hand Soap Supplies:

  • Small soaps, it’s perfectly fine (and frugal!) to use the ones you get from hotels
  • Boiling water
  • Honey or corn syrup
  • Refillable bottle or jar
  • Essential oils for fragrance (optional)

How to Make Liquid Soap:

1.  Grate soap into flakes using a box grater

2. Combine 1 C. soap flakes, 2 C. boiling water and 1 tbsp. honey or corn syrup

3.  Let mixture soak until soap has absorbed all the water (it will be very runny at first).

4. Place in blender and mix until smooth (adding more water if necessary)

5.  Add food coloring or essential oils for fragrance if desired

6.  Pour into a hand pump soap dispenser that you have already – nothing fancy required!

Note: It may take some tweaking to get the right consistency desired for your soap.  Although it may seem really runny at first, the soap does thicken a lot as it coagulates.  The first couple of times I tried making the soap it was too thick.
